Lack of parking lots causing traffic woes

Vijayawada: The lack of parking place across the city has now turned a big challenge to the state government. Several roads have already been widened without providing proper parking lots.
But vehicle owners are utilising the expanded roads for parking their vehicles instead of easing congestion. On the other hand, no official parking lots are provided by the civic body in the city limits even though the vehicles movement increased following the developments in Amaravati capital city.
The citizens are demanding the officials to provide parking areas while widening roads for development works. Recently, the State government has spent nearly Rs 3,000 crore on the city development after it assumed significance for its proximity to Amaravati capital city. Majority of funds have been allotted for road projects in the city neglecting provision for parking slots, opine citizens.
Already several roads like Autonagar 100 feet road, Gurunanak road, Singhnagar road, Pantakaalva road and Sambamurthy road were widened under the city beautification project. The officials of civic body along with Roads and Buildings department staff concentrated on road expansion works ignoring space for parking lots.
Under the widening of roads, the existing roads got additional space from 40 feet to 60 feet. But contrary to widening of road development plans, the unauthorised parking of vehicles drastically reduced the space of roads.
The local authorities including the police department is also turned a blind eye on the illegal parking. K Srinu, an auto driver of Christurajapuram, said: “There is no parking slot to stop the vehicles. If I want to go to shop, where can I park my auto? The other vehicle owners are also facing same parking problem.”
K Srinivasa Rao, an employee in private engineering company, said the government should provide provision for parking across the city. Stating parking slots provided in various major cities in the country, he said the local authorities are neglecting to implement similar plans due to lack of awareness.
