Amaravati: Citizens of Vijayawada have to wait at least one more year for the completion of Durga temple flyover. The work on the flyover started in 2015 and to be completed before Krishna Pushkaralu in June, 2016. But half of the project works are yet to be completed.
The government announced on Wednesday in the Legislative Council that the flyover works would be completed only by March 2019 and not before December 2018 deadline. So, the denizens of the city have to wait one more year for the completion of the flyover.
Minister for Roads and Buildings Ch Ayyannapatrudu said the construction works were delayed due to change of flyover design as well as halting of works due to the festivals like Dasara, Sivaratri and Bhavani Deeksha relinquishment, etc. The minister made this announcement in the Council, while replying to a question raised by MLCs Boddu Nageswara Rao and Y V B Rajendra Prasad over the slow progress of the construction works.
Ayyannapatrudu also found fault with the Union government saying that the Centre is not releasing funds hampering the progress of the project.
He said the Central government sanctioned the flyover project at a cost of Rs 447.80 crore in 2015 and works were also awarded in the same year to the Soma Constructions setting the deadline of July 2016.
The share of Central and state governments are Rs 333.21 and Rs 114.59 crore, respectively. He said the state government spent its share for land acquisition, replacement of water pipelines and powerlines and other civil works.
The minister said the flyover is first of its kind and being constructed with pre-fabricated technology and heavy machinery is used for setting the wings of the bridge on the spines. He found fault with the officials of the state government saying that entering an MoU for completion of the bridge in one year was a wrong decision.
The minister has wondered how a massive bridge with 2.60 km with six lanes would be completed in one year. He told the House that the traffic was halted on the road from Durga temple to Kummaripalem to prevent accidents as well as paving the way for speedy construction of the works.
He has assured the legislative council that the flyover bridge works would be completed by March 2019. The temple flyover project is one of the biggest projects taken up in the city in recent years. Lakhs of people are suffering due to slow progress of works and diversion of traffic.
