Vijayawada: The AP Greenery and Beautification Corporation (APGBC) introduced the Japanese origin Miyawaki system, a new method to develop greenery in the limits of Amaravati and Vijayawada.
According to officials, the new methods are being imported by Japanese scientists. Under the method, the plantations have to be protected for first three years. Later, no water and other caring methods are required for nurturing the plantations during their life time. The system requires very little space for nurturing the plants and the procedure is suitable to develop greenery in public places.
Now the APGBC is implementing the method across the state in greenery development works. Already the State government is giving utmost important to greenery projects in Amaravati and in other cities in the State. The State government allocated special funds for greenery development works and exclusively green corridors are being developed in Vijayawada, Guntur cities besides Amaravati.
The new system is useful to develop greenery, said Andhra Pradesh Greening and Beautification Corporation (APGBC) scientist and General Manager Deva Muni Reddy.
He said to The Hans India that the corporation is promoting 'Miyawaki' system of the plantation with the aim to help improve environment, flora and fauna. The new forestation method was conceived by famous Japanese ecologist Akira Miyawaki in which plantation of indigenous varieties could be undertaken in limited space and with less water.
“This system is gaining popularity all over the world as more plants can be nurtured in limited space. Four to five plants can be grown in one square metre," he said.
Muni Reddy further said the unscientific promotion of greenery was affecting the environment, and awareness programmes are being conducted to the nurseries to take up corrective measures. He said that 'Miyawaki' system concentrates on popularising under-exploited plants available aplenty in tribal, agency and forest areas.
"Under ‘Miyawaki’ system we need to take care of plants for three years. For three years we need to provide proper water, weeding, and fertilisers. Later, they take care of themselves,” he added.
