Maruti Suzuki dealerships across the country have now begun accepting bookings for the company’s upcoming S-Cross compact-SUV/crossover. Billing it as a ‘premium’ crossover, Maruti is asking prospective S-Cross customers to book their car by making a down payment of Rs 11,000.

The S-Cross straddles between two segments in the current car-market, the hatchback-based crossovers and the compact-SUVs and the company wants to exploit this position to the maximum. The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross will be projected as a premium product like the Ciaz sedan and will be exclusively sold through Maruti’s premium ‘Nexa’ showrooms after it is launched.

Maruti is in the process of setting up these premium showrooms across major cities in the country. Competition for the S-Cross will include hatchback-based crossovers like Volkswagen Cross Polo, Toyota Etios Cross, Hyundai i20 Active etc, while also going up against compact-SUVs/crossovers like Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano and the soon-to-be-launched Hyundai Creta. It is expected that Maruti will price the S-Cross in the Rs. 8-11 lakh segment.

The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross will get two powertrains, a 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel motor developing 90PS/200 Nm and a 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel motor developing 120PS/320 Nm. While the 1.3-litre DDiS motor will be paired to a 5-speed manual transmission, the 1.6-litre DDiS motor will be mated with a 6-speed manual transmission. Both the variants will be front-wheel driven. Maruti has no plans for launching the AWD variants of the car in India anytime soon.

Maruti can safely claim that the S-Cross is a ‘premium’ vehicle, it is a spacious 5-seater and will feature equipment like automatic projector headlamps, LED DRLs, electrically adjustable and folding ORVMs, auto-dimming IRVMs, front and rear power sockets, SmartPlay multimedia system with in-built navigation and Bluetooth connectivity, climate control system, Keyless entry-and-go, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, all-wheel disc brakes, ABS, front airbags, rear parking camera and sensors, etc.
