Order books are open in several countries including India for USD 1,000. Deliveries in India and other RHD models are expected to commence in 2018.The eagerly anticipated Tesla Model 3 pure electric sedan made its world premiere in California amidst much fanfare. Shortly before the unveil, Elon Musk posted a short video on his Twitter account showing a lengthy queue of people waiting to order their Model 3.
Given the strong response from several countries, the American EV maker is upbeat about the prospects of its latest and the most affordable creation. Yes, the Model 3 starts at an attractive USD 35,000 (around INR 23.23 lakhs). It will be pitted against compact luxury sedans like BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Mercedes C Class, Jaguar XE, Volvo S60 and so on.
Visually, the Tesla Model 3 adopts the brand’s signature aerodynamic fastback silhouette but is a good 20% smaller than the Model S. The front end features Porsche-like fender-munted peeled back headlamps. The grille is absent but there is a lower air-dam and narrow vertical intakes on the edges of the bumper. Sleek daytime LED running light strips below the headlamp round off the front end design.
At the rear, you get horizontal wraparound LED combination lights and a near vertical fascia. Interior, with its large centre console touchscreen display, has a familiar aura to it.
Technical details and detailed equipment list are under wraps as of now. Tesla has confirmed that the entry-level variant of the Model 3 is capable of doing 0-60 mph (96 kmph) in under 6 seconds. It will also receive the Auto Pilot features. Not surprisingly, the car receives 5-star rating for all safety aspects.
More details of the Tesla Model 3 would be revealed closer to the commencement of production. The company is confident of commencing deliveries in 2017.
