The Tata Motors Nano Factory in Singur, West Bengal continues to lie in waste. It has been 8 years since the Tata Motors Nano plant in Singur, West Bengal shut down. Every since, the land and infrastructure continue to lie in total abandonment. On 23rd September 2008, Ratan Tata declared that the entire Nano factory was being moved out of Singur, West Bengal. The decision followed after Mamta Banerjee’s movement against land acquisition.

The CPI (M) Left Front Government cited an 1894 Land Acquisition Act to take over the 997 acres of farmland for the factory which was opposed by locals and activists alike. This in turn led to an anti-land acquisition movement instigated by both Mamta Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress.

The Tata Nano factory now lies in total ruin and is preferred as a grazing ground for cattle quite unlike what Tata Motors had in mind. Tata Motors picked the town of 21,000 people situated 25 miles to the north of Kolkata as the new site for the Tata Nano plant.

Construction commenced but was met with fierce protests as the Trinamool Congress stated that local farmers were forced off their land. Plant operations halted in August of 2008 while two years later Tata Motor started production of the Nano in a new plant in Sanand, Gujarat.

The court had been informed that following the acquisition of the Singur land, the state government has transferred it to the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation following which it was handed over to Tata Motors. Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act have hence been enacted by Trinamool government to reclaim this land which could be returned to farmers from whom it was taken while they also did not accept compensation in lieu of the land.
