Upasana Singh, known for her role as “Bua” (Paterna aunt) in the TV show ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’ has garnered accolades for her performance and wit. In a career spanning over two decades, Upasana has done many films and television shows. In a freewheeling chat, she talks about her role as “Bua” and her journey so far Abhyudaya Karamchetu

Excerpts:
How did the stint with acting started?
I’m from Hoshiyarpur, Punjab. First of all I want to broach that, what I am today is all because of my mother. I belong to staid Sikh family, where even dreaming about acting is wrong. But my mother always stood with me and said I have all rights to wangle my dreams. I used to partake in youth festivals and programmes in Jalandhar Doordarshan. Simultaneously I learned Kathak for six years. When I was 12-13 years old I started giving voice to lead character of the show and because of that I am very clear in diction in Hindi and Urdu.

How is the journey so far?
When I moved to Mumbai, I got job within seven days. My first film was ‘Rajsthani Bai Chali Sasariya’, which is a tremendous hit in Rajsthan. Subsequently I did Gujarati films followed by Punjabi and Hindi. I personally belong to theatre so I always feel that I have to do divergent characters. I played a role dumb and deaf girl in ‘Judai’ and after that people started acknowledging my talent.

What is your finesse in comedy?
Doing comedy is very arduous. My first comedy film was in Gujarati. I use to watch Mehmood and Charlie Chaplin films to learn the nuances of it. I also learn from the co-comedians.

Comedy is about timing? How do manage it?
An actor is actor, and if you have talent in you then you can play any role. I’m very fun loving person and people enjoy my company. I think I have timing sense in me and maybe that makes me to project my emotions on right time.

What kind of research you do for your roles?
Whenever, I do any role I feel what Upasana will do if she is going through same plights in her personal life and how she will react? When I play a role, my observation helps a lot to get into the skin of the character.

What made you accept the role of “Bua”?
When the show started it was slated only for 26 episodes. Kapil came to me and explained about the role. He said that “Pinky Bua” is a spinster, and everyone points about it in the house. This intrigued me and I accepted the offer as I never portrayed this kind of role.

Are you a director’s artiste?
I’m definitely a director’s artiste and I only do what director tells me, because he is the captain of the ship, however, I do give my inputs. I’m blessed because till now all the directors I worked gave me freedom to give my inputs.

How is your equation with Kapil Sharma?
We all are like family members. I think I don’t spent much time with my family, the way I spend time on sets. Kapil is like a brother to me.

“Bua” is desperate to get marry, when your husband watches your show, what are his comments?
Initially, my husband did not like it because he would feel bad when people made fun of me on the show but now he laughs too. As we belong to same field I don’t think there will be any hurdles regarding the shows I do.

You are a successful actor now, what’s next?
I feel like to direct and I want to direct those roles, which I missed due to my age and at the same time I do the shows which collaborate to my age.
