The top 10 movies of Bollywood in 2015
Sure it is at times a boring ritual to read for some. Trust me If you are a Bollywood Cinema buff then 2015 turned out to be a rocker. Read on to find out why.
Baby: I had written this about ‘Baby’ that a decade or two down the line when Akshay Kumar looks back at his collection of work this one might figure in his top three. From the word go ‘Baby’ was very paisa vasool to the last penny of the ticket price. What do you say about a movie where the characters are so well written that a Madhurima Tuli with her “Mar mat jaana” line garnered social media attention.
NH10: Produced by Anushka Sharma herself. This was a real dark horse. The movie scares you about the lawlessness that prevails around us and could hit us any moment. How a split second of impulse puts a couple right in the centre of a ruthless feudal village gang in Haryana. This one was not for the weak hearts. Super effort by the producer and director and luckily it got favourable numbers at the box office. “Chil gaye naina” of course was an icing on the cake.
Piku: This is pure subtle enjoyable electricity. The triangle of Amitabh-Irrfan-Deepika delivered a content, which was being enjoyed even by 8-year- olds in the theatre. A mix of comic moments and human emotions, this is Deepika’s best work till date. After a long time, after Vinod Khanna rather, we saw an actor who matched Amitabh step for step. Watch it again and you will not be able to decide who was better Amitabh or Irrfan , that is Piku’s biggest plus point.
Dil Dhadakne Do: Not as entertaining as ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, this one still delivered as an engaging cinema. It also proved and reminded us that Anil Kapoor can never be written off. Add a lovely ocean cruise and this one gets some marks from me for a great one time watch. You should not miss it if you have not seen it yet.
Baahubali: God. I could write about this one till they release the second part. This one was voltage redefined. Solid screen blazing characters, great moments, a great pair of hero v/s villain and thrilling background score made the film an exciting affair. Mammoth war scene and artistically done action choreography. SS Rajamouli and his boys redefined large canvas for all of us. In one line 2015 belonged to Baahubali. A young baby held in a hand with a ferocious river gushing all around it –shall remain my favourite moment.
Bajrangi Bhaijan: Salman Khan delivered his career best performance with this one. His bonding with the young girl who wants to go back to her home and an extremely straight from the heart performance from Nawazuddin makes this one the best entertainer of 2015.
Drishyam: In my very personal opinion – ‘Drishyam’ was the best film of 2015. For two reasons, it had superb twists and moments of suspense in it. Second –Tabbu v/s Ajay Devgan was one of the best clashes on screen in recent years and like Piku, in this one too, you would not be able to decide who came out better. The story of a man; who can go to any extent to save his daughter. If you are a movie buff and have not yet watched it you have committed an unpardonable crime.
Phantom: Probably Saif Ali Khan’s most intense performance as a soldier who longs for his dignity and who dies unrecognised. This one was based on retribution by the state for its innocent. The movie had a great screenplay and some extremely well executed scenes of action. This one for some strange reason did not get the numbers, which I thought it deserved but ranks in the better efforts of 2015.
Talvar: ‘Talvar’ deserves a mention for three reasons. If true this movie pointed to one of India’s biggest stories of injustice. It has Irrfan’s best performance of 2015, yes, better than Piku.
MSG1 and MSG 2: Oh lest I be blamed, this was also a year of a record that went unnoticed. A movie and its sequel were released in the same year. MSG and MSG 2. You do not know? Don’t bother!
