Shankar managed to acquire the remake rights beating stiff competition from producers like Anil Sunkara, Bhimaneni Srinivas Rao and Boppana Chandrasekhar

Actor Sunil, who will start shooting for the second schedule of director ‘Malli Malli Idhi Raani Roju’ director Kranthi Madav’s yet-untitled next from August 29, Talkies has learnt, has agreed to star in the remake of Malayalam box-office smash ‘Two Countries’.

Although Bandla Ganesh had the remake rights, his plans of taking it on to floors with Venkatesh and Ram fell through, prompting him to part with the rights to N Shankar who would be remaking it with Sunil.

A source confirms, “After Bandla Ganesh’s plans failed to yield desired results, the likes of Anil Sunkara, Bhimaneni Srinivas Rao and Boppana Chandrasekhar (‘Kevv Keka’ producer) made valiant efforts to obtain the rights from Malayalam producer M Renjith. They all wanted to remake it with Allari Naresh. In fact, Boppana and his team camped in Kerala for three days to snatch the rights for Rs 43 lakh but as Shankar met Renjith’s demand of Rs 46 lakh, he was given the go-ahead. Shankar later took the required NOC from Bandla Ganesh.”

Why didn’t Ram say yes to the remake? The source adds, “Although his uncle Sravanthi Ravi Kishore loved ‘Two Countries’, he felt it wouldn’t fit Ram.”

The source adds that N Shankar is currently tweaking the script to suit regional intricacies. “Sunil loved ‘Two Countries’ and felt it would add to his resume moving forward. He is excited about the remake but the changes should convince him.”

Released last year, ‘Two Countries’, about the tale of a shrewd guy who goes through immigration issues, turned out to be second highest grossing Malayalam comedy. Directed by Shafi, it featured Dileep, Mamta Mohandas and Isha Talwar in the lead roles.
