A professor of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly raping an employee 12 days ago. Aloke Kumar Ghoshal, the dean of Academic Affairs at the institute, has been accused by the woman of sexually exploiting her for a month.

A professor of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly raping an employee 12 days ago. Aloke Kumar Ghoshal, the dean of Academic Affairs at the institute, has been accused by the woman of sexually exploiting her for a month.

The professor was questioned on Monday and arrested from the IIT campus on Tuesday.

"We received a complaint against the professor and started our investigations four days ago. We got some evidence and found that there is a need to arrest the professor for proper investigation," senior police officer Anand Prakash Tiwari said.



Professor Ghoshal is in the Chemical Engineering Department and the woman who has filed the rape complaint is reportedly an office assistant.

Reports suggest that Professor Ghoshal, who has been sent to 14-day judicial custody, has been removed and will be replaced by a new dean.

Professor Ghoshal has a B Tech degree in chemical engineering from Calcutta University and also studied in IIT, Kharagpur.

IIT is India's premier engineering and management educational institute. The institute in Guwahati is among the newer of 16 IITs in the country.
