Hyderabad: A Home Guard, who is supposed to be upholding law and order, turned out to be a habitual chain snatcher. Working with the Balanagar Traffic Police station in Jeedimetla, Mahender Singh Chowda, 28, who had so far resorted to over 36 offences and was on a snatching spree in Cyberabad police limits, was nabbed by the Balanagar cops on Tuesday. Police raided his house and recovered one kg and 12 tolas of gold and two bikes, worth Rs 30 lakh.

Following frequent chain snatching incidents in Cyberabad area, a special team was constituted to nab the culprits. Acting on a tip-off, a team led by ACP (Balanagar) N Narasimha Reddy arrested an accused who turned out to be a Home Guard. He was arrested along with his accomplice, Mandru Mary Deena Latha, 28, of Jeedimetla. Mahender confessed to his involvement in chain snatching with Mary, the cops said, adding that it came as a rude shock to them.

Explaining the modus operandi, the Joint CP (Cyberabad) TV Shasidhar Reddy said that Mahender would select isolated places and target women walking on the streets and speed off on a bike after committing the offence. He committed similar offences in Jeedimetla, Sanathnagar, Balanagar, KPHB, Kukatpally, Miyapur, Petbasheerabad and Alwal areas. He would hide the stolen property at Mary’s place. The accused were remanded to judicial custody.
