Hyderabad: Following a spate of chain-snatching incidents in Hyderabad, the city police detained 160 persons during cordon and search operation under the south zone limits in the city.

According to police, as many as 91 vehicles were also seized during the operation on Monday. South Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police V Satyanarayana said that the spate of chain-snatching incidents had triggered panic among people, particularly the women.

The cordon and search operation was conducted to curb the crime and instil confidence among people, he said. The operation conducted by 15 police teams, each headed by an Inspector of Police, led to detention of 52 offenders, involved in one or other case in the past.

As many as 16 of them were held in Charminar division, 22 in Mirchowk, 11 in Falaknuma and three in Santoshnagar, the DCP said.

“There are nine persons, who were involved in chain-snatching incidents in the past, among those detained during the operation.As many as 40 of those detained are locals and 68 have hailed from different places like West Bengal, Bihar and Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh.

Fifteen Burmese were also taken into custody for failing to show valid papers to allow them to stay in the country,” the DCP said.Those detained were sent to Central Crime Station for verification of their antecedents and collecting their fingerprints.

The vehicles, mostly bikes were seized because there were no valid documents for them, the DCP said.
