Visakhapatnam: One worker was killed and two others sustained burns in an explosion at Hetero Drugs bulk drug manufacturing unit at Nakkapalli in Visakhapatnam district on Wednesday evening.

Soon after the incident, hundreds of employees staged a protest against the management in front of the unit for ignoring safety measures. The deceased was identified as S Appa Rao (34), a native of Nakkapalli.

The injured were Y Simhachalam also of Nakkapalli and Mohammed Rahman of Hyderabad. They were shifted to King George Hospital in the city for treatment. The body of the deceased has been shifted to Yelamanchili for post-mortem.

The leaders of CITU and some employees in the unit said that the explosion occurred when a drum filled with waste was being discharged from the bulk drugs manufacturing unit. The police and others are yet to ascertain the exact reason for the explosion.

Unconfirmed sources said that the explosion occurred due to the Isopropyl chloroformate chemical in the drum. It may be recalled that four people died in a major blast at the unit on January 13 this year.
