Hyderabad: Ashoka University, located in Haryana, on Wednesday announced that it is doubling its scholarships to Rs 21 cr for its incoming undergraduate class of 2015. Over two thirds of the undergraduate students studying at the varsity will receive scholarships ranging from 10 per cent to 112 per cent of the total tuition fee.

According to the model endorsed by the university, the scholarship will be granted on the basis of merit. There will also be need based scholarships. While evaluating a student’s need for aid, the institution will look at a student’s family income, number of earning members, number of dependents, assets and liabilities.

On the occasion of the announcement, Pramath Raj Sinha, Founder and Trustee, Ashoka University said, “Private universities are often looked upon as commercial ventures. The prime motivation of all 61 founders is to make sure that quality education is accessible to students irrespective of their economic and social backgrounds."

For its inaugural undergraduate batch last year, the University had offered scholarships worth Rs 10.8 cr. Over 68 per cent of the current undergraduate batches have been awarded some form of scholarship. Special circumstances are also given consideration. The entirety of their finances is taken into account while computing the percentage of scholarship that a student will get.

In addition to the above, all students admitted to the university will have access to a number of student loans options that are independent of the university aid package. These loans will be made available in collaboration with banks and other financial institutions that provide said loans at low interest rates, and without having to provide collateral.
