G Konduru (Krishna): The Circle Inspector of G Konduru police station in Krishna district on Sunday opened fire at an angry mob, resulting in injuries to four persons. A large mob of villagers attacked the police station, following the suspicious death of a youth. They held the police responsible as the latter had taken into custody the youth, Palagani Ramakrishna, an MBA first year student, in an elopement case. He eloped with a married woman last week and her husband lodged a complaint with the police. The police traced the couple in Guntur and took them back to the village. After sending the woman to her parents' place, they allegedly detained the youth at the police station for "questioning." On July 4, a dead body was found alongside railway tracks near Mangalagiri in Guntur district. The G Konduru villagers learnt on Sunday that the body was that of Ramakrishna. Attack
On receipt of the news, a large number of people gathered and their anger flared up. They rushed to the police station and caught hold of the personnel there and beat them up black and blue. As bleeding injuries were caused to the Sub-Inspector and some constables in the attack, Circle Inspector U Bangarraju opened fire at the angry mob, causing bullet injuries to four of them. The firing further aggravated the situation, provoking the mob to barge into the police station and destroy the furniture. In the melee, the CI and his staff managed to flee the scene. Senior police officials from the district headquarters, Machilipatnam and the range headquarters, Eluru, rushed to the village to bring the situation under control. G Konduru along with additional forces to monitor the situation. The condition of the injured is said to be stable. They have been identified as: D Narasimha Rao, N Krishna Rao, V Surya Narayana and N Venkatramaiah. They are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Vijayawada. Several political leaders including TDP MLA Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao, YSR Congress MLA Jogi Ramesh reached G Konduru and staged protests against the police action. They demanded immediate suspension of CI Bangarraju who shot at the villagers. Superintendent of Police Prabhakar Rao said that a judicial inquiry would be conducted and action would be taken against the officials if they were found to be guilty. However, neither political leaders nor the villagers were pacified by his words. District Collector Buddhaprakash M Jyothi, Joint Collector Usha Rani, Sub- Collector Harichandana, Eluru Range DIG Vikram Singh Mann and others are monitoring the situation closely in G Konduru.
