City’s arterial roads will get a facelift when GHMC acquires these roads

In November, during the GHMC’s engineering review meeting, Somesh Kumar, Commissioner, remarked that the civic body has been facing flak from the public for no fault of it, as the maintenance of most of the roads, which belong to the R&B department, was not up to the mark. Last week, the heads of both the GHMC and R&B department met and it was decided that the GHMC would take over the repair and maintenance of the roads which belong to the R&B deparment. The motive of the takeover is to ensure that the quality of all the roads in the city remains uniform

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will soon be responsible for 190 km of roads which fall under the purview of Roads and Buildings (R&B) department. This was decided at a meeting of Sam Bob, principal secretary, R&B, and Somesh Kumar, Commissioner, GHMC, on January 31 at the Secretariat to decide on the terms for the takeover. Once the procedure is complete, the GHMC would take up repair works and other maintenance activities on the newly acquired roads.

Now that both the agencies have come to a mutual understanding, the proposal has been sent to the chief secretary. A GO would soon be passed in this regard in a few days.

Sam Bob told Hyderabad Hans, “In my meeting with Somesh Kumar, it was decided that once the proposal is approved, all the roads, except for the national highways, which come under the purview of the R&B department, would be handed over to the GHMC. Currently there are 19 state highways which fall under the GHMC’s limits. Though the R&B department would retain the ownership of the roads, all the maintenance work would be entrusted to the GHMC.”

To ensure that there were no transitional hassles, the R&B department would also constitute a sub-division, which would work in close coordination with the GHMC.

As of now, the GHMC has been unable to fully repair the roads. It has only limited its repair work to the identification and filling of potholes on all the major roads.

“We have been given a sub-division of the R&B’s roads for maintenance purposes. During the meeting, we spoke about the budget and sanctions also. But it was not very clear. The GHMC has always been quick to respond to potholes and other such hassles. Once we acquire these roads, we will continue to do the same,” said Somesh Kumar.

With regard to the battered condition of roads during every monsoon, Somesh Kumar said, “We have already begun the desilting works on all these roads. We have also identified all the major water-logging areas. We will work in close proximity with the R&B to find a permanent solution.”
