Mercedes has pulled the wraps off its forthcoming SUV, the GLE-Class at the 2015 New York Motor Show. The GLE-Class replaces the ML-Class in international markets, and will go on sale starting July 2015.Recently, Mercedes introduced a new naming structure for its crossovers and SUVs. According to that, all the upcoming generations of the current SUVs/crossovers will be rebadged based on their platform.

For example, the ML-Class is based on the E-Class sedan platform, hence, it gets renamed as GLE-Class. Same goes for other models as well. This also means that the new GLE is essentially an ML-Class underneath, although, it now comes with significant revisions.Design wise, the new GLE gets a number of prominent inclusions such as a new pair of S-Class inspired swept-back headlamps with daylight running lamps, redesigned bumper and grille and a more muscular bonnet design.

At the back, the GLE sports a new set of LED tail-lights and a restyled bumper with reshaped exhausts. While the updates make the new model look more aggressive than before, it has to be said that the overall silhouette of the GLE-Class remains largely identical to the ML-Class.In terms of power train options, the GLE will retain the petrol and diesel engines from the outgoing car.

However, in addition to that, Mercedes will also offer a new plug-in hybrid version. This eco-friendly variant will come badged as GLE500e 4MATIC, featuring a plug-in setup having a 330PS 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine coupled to a 115PSelectric motor. Power will be sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic gearbox.
