Goda Ranganatha Swamy temple in in Edulabad

History

According to locals the lake is more than 400 years old. There is an ancient temple of Sri Laxminarayana near the lake. Hence it came to be known as Laxminarayana Cheruvu. Goda Ranganatha Swamy temple located nearby is also historic. This temple is said to have been constructed between 15th and 16th century during the regime of Quli Qutub Shah.

Edulabad was then known as Rayapuram. Though there are many such temples across the country, the three most prominent among them are the ones in Srivilliputhur in Tamil Nadu and the other two in Andhra Pradesh.

Problems

Pittila Srishailam, a member of Save Our Urban Lakes (SOUL), said, “The lake is subjected to rampant encroachments. The FTL, fencing and boundaries were broken and unauthorised pedestrians walkways were laid and nalas were buried. The entire lake and its surroundings has now turned into a cesspool due to industrial pollutants mixing in the lake. A tributary of Musi River has merged with the lake, leading to water contamination.”
