The award was presented by Prof. Ahmed Kamal, director, IICT-Hyderabad. The award includes a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and a trophy. The award is aimed at young scientists to encourage research in physics, chemistry and allied science, biological sciences and mathematics. The Society was founded in 2001 by forming a corpus of donations from friends and family of Dr Rao.

He retired as Superintendent Chemist, Geological Survey of India. The passion of Dr Rao by taking part actively in promotion and encouragement of young scientists in pursuit of their research activities has been instrumental in bringing about this society.

Kuladeep Rajamudili who joined in School of Physics under the supervision of Prof. D Narayana Rao in 2009 has recently submitted his thesis titled ‘Ultrafast laser induced periodic sub-wavelength structures on semiconductors and metals and its applications in photonics’.

Kuladeep had also won the best poster award in DAE-BRNS National Laser Symposium (NLS-23) held at Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati in December 3-6, 2014 for his research paper entitled, “Femtosecond laser induced periodic sub-wavelength surface structures on Silicon in air and water”.

He received the best poster award out of more than 300 participants.” He has authored more than twenty research articles that have been published in various international journals.
