Only Indian in Asian Jr TT team
India’s most promising paddler and Hyderabad’s very own teenaged sensation, Akula Sreeja, achieved yet another Asian high on Monday. Taken under any yardstick, the latest recognition will stand testimony to her talent in the age-group category that is getting accolades as being among the very best in the continent.
Quite significantly, she is the only Indian to land up with the ‘dream come true’ recognition. Her immediate next destination will be three European cities as part of an exclusive Asian Junior club. Enjoying a phenomenal run in international engagements for the past two seasons, Sreeja, an Intermediate second year student at Badruka Junior College, has been selected by the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU), for three overseas assignments under its vibrant scheme, ‘Pathways to Excellence-2015,’ which was evolved to knit a strong Asian team that can give the European counterparts a run for their money.
As part of the tour, she will be part of a training camp in Sweden from August 6 to 17. That will be followed by participation in the Bulgaria Open (August 19-23) and Czech Open (August 24-30). "I am overwhelmed for getting selected on this major assignment. The exposure will help me a lot. I owe my rise to my coach at Global Table Tennis Academy (GTTA), Somnath Ghosh Sir.
Of course, while the recognition makes me happy, I also realise that the expectations would have also increased correspondingly,” points out the youngster, who was greeted by officials of Telangana Table Tennis Association and GTTA soon after the official intimation came from Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI).
Ghosh said that he was proud of his ward’s progress and hoped that this will come as the perfect inspiration for Sreeja, when she runs into her peers from across Europe during her tour. Prior to flying to Europe, Sreeja, who is fresh from a golden triple at the South Asian TT championships, will attend the Indian camp at New Delhi from July 8-22 from where she will participate in the Asian Championships to be hosted by Malaysia from July 22-27.
