Hyderabad’s Carnatic music pride R Mridula gave a vocal concert on Sunday as part of monthly concert of Sri Kartikeya Gana Sabha at Sri Gnana Saraswati Temple in Musheerabad. Mridula is a graded artist of AIR. She has given performances in many prominent music organisations in Southern states.
She received the Kalasagaram Tambura prize in 2013; Pt. Jasraj Award instituted by Rotary Hyderabad (2013), Young Talent award of Sri Kartikeya Gana Sabha (2013) and recently ‘Sangeetha Sri’ title by Rasika Ranjani Sabha of Trichy (Tamil Nadu). Mridula started her concert with ‘Intha Chalamuseya’ famous Begada Varnm of Veena Kuppayyer with a decent swarakalpna. She took ‘Mahaganapathey’ (Abhogi) of NS Ramachandran as an invocation item and moved on to ‘Senapathey’ (Kasiramakriya) of Muthuswamy Deekshitulu much to the delight of the listeners.
She then took Navarsakannada Raga Krithi ‘Nee Padamuley Gathiyani Nirtamu Ney Namminanu’ of Ramanad Srinivasa Ayyengar as a straight rendition showering the lyrical beauty. Mridula preferred a good work of Thyagaraja (not frequently attempted by musicians) as the main item of the day with ‘Karmamey Balavanthamaye Talli’ (Saveri) which proved to be a decent presentation be it in Ragaprastharam or Swarakalpna traits.
Her delineation of Anupallavi charana (phrase) ‘Sakalaloka Saakshi’ was well dealt with all the melodic touch depicting her manodharma in ample measure. This kutchery proved to be a best presentation in recent times which denoted Mridula’s seasoned practice besides improvement of her tonal culture to the best enjoyment of the audience.
A jewel piece of the evening
It was prudent on Mridula’s part to choose well knitted sanskrit text ‘Veena Panni Madhuravani Keeravani Mathey Salahou’ as Pallavi for Raga Thanam Pallavi item in the Rag ‘Keeeravani’ where she displayed Ragalapana Thana rendition besides a sumptuous Pallavi flow of swarakalpana in the Ragas Kalyani, Vagadheeswari, Dharmavathi, Sriranjani and Saraswathi which was a feast for the music lovers.
She concluded with ‘Muddu Gare Yashoda’ (Chenchooti) of Annamacharya and a Thillana in the Rag Vasantha chiselling melody in all its richness. N Ch Anantha Krishna (voilin) and B Vidyasagar (Mridangam) gave excellent instrumental support.
