Lake Police inspector Sridevi has gone on record stating that in spite of an increase in the number of persons rescued from committing suicide by jumping into the Hussain Sagar Lake what is alarming is the growing numbers of teenagers attempting to end their life.

This year alone the Lake Police rescued 33 teenagers from the Lake. Upon counselling, it was revealed that these survivors decided to take the extreme step for reasons like being chided by their mother, getting beaten up by their father and failing in examinations.

Speaking to The Hans India, Sridevi said, “Women constitute the major chunk of those who want to snuff out their lives.

During the current year, 112 had attempted suicide. Of this about 45 alone were women, who attempted to end lives in March, June and July.”

The police attribute increased suicide tendency among the people citing ‘society’ as the reason.

“They put society first rather than themselves. People are thinking too much and taking recourse to suicides as if it is the only solution for all problems, however trivial they might be,” said Sridevi.

To prevent suicides, there is a police constable around the Lake for every 300 yards. In spite of this, the unforeseen happens.

In 2013, 126 persons jumped into the Lake; the police rescued 77.

In 2014, 132 persons attempted suicide and only 50 lives could be saved. In 2015, out of 254 who jumped into the Lake, 47 met with the tragic end.

This year 36 people died by jumping into the Lake.

According to an observation made by the police, those who wear old rags, are in pensive mood and sit at a place for hours together are sure to take the extreme step.

The police keep a watchful eye on the movements of such elements and get them counselled by experts through the Lake Police Bharosa Centre.

Inspector Sridevi informed that another positive development is the reduction in the number of persons committing suicide due to love failure.

“Young men and women treat Hussain Sagar Lake as their adda to take the extreme step.

The Lake Police constituted a special team for identifying lovebirds resorting to take a plunge into the lake,” she said.

“The reasons for people taking the extreme step vary from person to person like love failure, financial difficulties, family feuds between husband and wife and so on.

The people are acting on the spur to kill themselves on minor and irrelevant issues treating them as huge problems,” said Sridevi.

“Come to counselling centres. It’s for your good,” she said.
