If you think TB is a disease of lungs only, you are mistaken. Doctors at Care Hospitals have identified active TB infection of the heart muscle, which is called as ‘Myocardial Tuberculosis’ in medical terminology. TB of the heart is found in patients suffering from another heart abnormality called Ventricular Tachycardia (VT). VT is a serious rhythm abnormality of the heart. VT is known to cause faster heartbeats, which sometimes can lead to death.

Though TB can affect any organ in the body, the heart muscle is usually considered safe. Left untreated, these patients get hospitalised repeatedly undergoing expensive medical procedures or may get into worsening heart failure.

According to doctors at Care Hospitals, it is difficult to suspect ‘heart TB’ which is present in a patient, because common symptoms of TB like fever and weight loss are absent in such patients.Findings of myocardial TB in 13 patients by doctors at Care Hospitals, has been published in the Journal of American College of Cardiology, a reputed international journal in cardiovascular medicine.

Their finding acquired added significance because 13 is the highest number of myocardial TB cases in the world reported so far. Five more cases have been diagnosed recently and this takes the total number to 18. Dr C Narasimhan, Chief of Electrophysiology services said that this was an important report as TB affecting the heart was new knowledge in the field of medicine.

Left untreated, these patients get hospitalised repeatedly undergoing expensive medical procedures or may get into worsening heart failure. Apart from heart rhythm disorders like VT, myocardial TB patients can present with heart failure or heart blocks, depending on the area of the heart muscle affected.
