GHMC disconnects power supply to 240 cell phone towers

With over 6,000 unauthorised cellphone towers identified in the city, the GHMC has punched the last nail in the coffin as of Thursday. The civic body had cut-off the power supply to 240 such illegal cell-phone towers which were perched atop private and public buildings.

According to GO No 380, every cell-phone service providers must satisfy a certain criteria and norms to register and authorise the erection of their respective telecommunications tower atop public or private buildings. While some service providers actually register themselves and take the required permissions, there are many which flout the rules and the number of illegal towers speaks for itself.

As per the norms, the service operators are required to submit a location plan, site plan and a structural stability plan. And, the structural stability plan must be verified by engineers belonging to either All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) or from any government institution. Also, they need to have in hand an NOC (No Objection Certificate) by the Airports Authority of India and one from the building owner.

To complete the registration process, the existing service providers must also pay a fee of Rs 1 lakh. But in the city it has been noticed that many cell-phone towers missed a step. Currently the owners of the 240 towers have been notified and have been asked to update their details with the GHMC for verification purposes.

According to officials in the civic body, most of these towers have been served a notice. Due to a no-show on the provider’s part, the civic body had to resort to this measure. Ronald Ross, IAS, Additional Commissioner, Town Planning, says, “As of now, we have halted the drive after a few operators approached us asking for a few days time.”

He further added that, “This will serve as a warning for all the service providers and they will be wary enough to pay the fine and stick to the rules in the future.”

For further erections of towers, the service providers will have to abide by the rules as mentioned in the GO.
