Even after a lapse of two weeks, the employees of Mecca Masjid haven’t received their salaries. Mecca Masjid has 30 employees and 20 home guards. Police officials contacted the Minorities Welfare Department (MWD) and paid their salaries. At that time, an assurance was given that in the future salaries would be paid on time.

The total salary bill of Mecca Masjid employees comes to around Rs 3 lakh per month. “The employees live in rented houses and it becomes very difficult for them if they don’t get salaries on time. The MWD should take immediate action to release their salaries,” said a senior employee at the mosque.
In October 2013, employees at the mosque were peeved as they didn’t receive their salaries. It was the same year when there was a jump of almost 110 per cent in the budget for minorities’ welfare, which stood at Rs 1,027 crore.
When continuous representations didn’t yield any result, employees went on strike when Bakrid was nearing. The salaries of manual workers at the mosque amount to Rs 6,700 each. Muazzin’s salary is Rs 9,500 and the salary of the Imam and the superintendent of the mosque is Rs 10,500 each. The 20 home guards in the mosque, who were employed after the 2007 bomb blasts, get around Rs 6,000 per month.
Khaja Nayeemuddin, superintendent of Mecca Masjid, said, “All the employees of the mosque are economically poor, their sole income is their monthly salary. A delay is frustrating them and they are emotionally distressed.”
