Women need to learn martial arts: Dr Kamala Selvaraj

Vellore: With an aim to protect them from becoming victim of gender based attacks, eminent gynecologist Dr Kamala Selvaraj advised women to learn martial arts and dress modestly to safeguard themselves. Addressing students at the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) University commemorating International Women’s Day, Dr Selvaraj also emphasised that 18 to 25 years would be the right age for a girl to get married.

“It is at this age that a woman can enjoy the company of her children,” she said. An obstetrician and gynaecologist and daughter of late film actor Gemini Ganesan, she said each woman should identify her talent and try to reach her goals. Youngsters should not cultivate the habit of smoking tobacco items and consuming alcohol, as these lead to lung cancer and other incurable diseases.

Women should learn karate or some form of martial arts to safeguard themselves against erring men, advised the gynecologist. In his presidential address, VIT University chancellor, Dr G Viswanathan, said that by bringing in total prohibition across the country, violence and crimes perpetrated against women could be stopped and for this women should take the lead role. In the field of education, women should be given equal opportunity and they should fight against early marriages; men, too, should join them, he added.

He pointed out that at VIT University though girls constitute only one-third of the student population, they scored top ranks.Earlier Dr Kamala Selvaraj distributed lifetime achievement award to VIT Professor MA Vijayalakshmi, director of bio-separation technology for her contribution in science, engineering and technology.

She also distributed prizes to faculty and students who had won in various competitions like rangoli, cooking, fun and talent, sports events. VIT University vice-presidents Sekar Viswanathan and GV Selvam, Pro-VC, Dr S Narayanan were others who were present at the function.
