The Road Transport Corporation (RTC) officials should have let out a sigh of relief when 80 Volvo buses were unveiled recently by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. However, right from placing the order to the unveiling of the buses, the officials had to sweat it out. Though the buses arrived early they were kept at a yard for months together for reasons known only to officials, a move which drew flak from all corners. Finally, when the issue seems to have settled down, the very buses are posing a new problem for the RTC.

The problem now at hand is that there aren’t any takers for these buses. Passengers are citing high priced tickets as a reason for not boarding them. The base fare is Rs 15 and for every two kilometres one has to shell out Rs 5 that means for a travel of 50 km one has to pay Rs 110.

“The monthly pass costs Rs 2,000 for these air-conditioned buses. Passes that were issued for ordinary and metro buses are not applicable in the Volvo buses. The minimum fare in the ordinary buses is Rs 5 and for Volvo it is three times more. The fare puts a considerable dent in ones wallet,” said Yadagiri, a night-watchman.

The Dilsukhnagar-Kukatapally route, which is getting a good response, is offering some respite to the RTC. However, RTC officials state that it’s just the winter that is keeping people away from the air-conditioned Volvo buses. “After the winter these buses will become full,” an official said.
