Novel ideas were implemented by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in the past to force property tax defaulters to pay up. Novel ideas were implemented by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in the past to force property tax defaulters to pay up. One such idea was to get a band play dhol in front of defaulters’ houses. But the recent ploy by the civic body to place dustbins at the entrance of the defaulters’ properties has not gone down well with the people.

Deputy Commissioner MSS Somaraju, circle 10, said, “On Thursday, officials placed dustbins in front of ten defaulters’ properties to block their entrance.” Amjad, a former corporator, said, “The corporation has every right to get people to pay up. But using such tactics is a big ‘no no’. Many a time officials just land in front of houses.”

Revathi Muthuswamy, a social activist, said, “While the GHMC has the right to collect taxes, the means of collection have to be proper. At a time when swine flu is causing so much panic, the corporation’s idea to place dustbins is nauseating to say the least.” The property tax drive has however had its effect and a few defaulters started paying their dues. Big defaulters however are yet to pay up.

Rakesh, a resident of Punjagutta, said, “The GHMC swings into action and puts all efforts in tax collection. But when people complain about civic issues this energy is not seen. We have participated in the Prajavani programmes several times but our grievances are still to be addressed.”
