Hurricane Gonzalo batters UK; 3 killed

Indian airlines such as Air India and Jet Airways report no disruptions

London: At least three persons were killed in the UK as the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalo struck Britain on Tuesday, causing rush-hour travel disruption with cancellation of several flights at the country's biggest airport Heathrow.

A woman has died after being hit by a falling tree in high winds in Knightsbrige area of central London, while two men died in separate accidents in Essex and Merseyside across Britain.

In another incident, a man hit by a tree blown over in Belgravia, central London, has been taken to hospital with head, chest and leg injuries. Heathrow Airport said 10 per cent of flights with the 20 biggest carriers into and out of the London airport were cancelled.

Indian airlines such as Air India and Jet Airways, however, reported no disruptions and said they were "operating on time". Gusts of up to 70mph have been recorded in north Wales, and a Met Office low-level yellow wind warning remains in place for much of the UK.

"The strongest winds are expected on Tuesday as the low pressure clears eastwards. There remains the potential for localised disruption to travel, especially as the strongest winds will coincide with rush hour in places," a Met Office spokesperson said.

"Fallen leaves impeding drainage increases the risk of surface water affecting roads, while some damage to trees is possible, given that many are still in full leaf," he added.
