London: President Barack Obama is set to take off Cuba from U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism, the White House has said.

Obama noted that Cuba had not provided support for international terrorism over the last six months and had assured that it will not do so in the future as well, reported the BBC.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said that while the two nations continued to have differences over Cuban policies and actions but they were not "relevant" to the terror list.

The move came amid a normalization of ties between the two countries.

The Caribbean nation 's presence on the terror list had been a key sticking point for Cuba during talks to reopen embassies.

The decision however, was condemned by Republican Senator Marco Rubio who claimed that the nation remained a state sponsor of terrorist activities.

It came after Obama announced a historic thaw in relations between the two countries in December.
