20 Muslim couples get married during mass marriage programme govt2 Kadapa: Andhra Pradesh is the only State in the country where the government was taking measures for the development of minorities, claimed Minister for Minority Welfare Mohd Ahmedullah. He recalled that the government has allocated Rs 1,027 crore in the budget for the welfare of minorities. He took part in mass marriages of Muslims at the YSR Municipal Auditorium here on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the government has granted Rs 5 crore for the mass marriages this year, while mass marriages were conducted for three times during this year. The government was ready to conduct mass marriages if the persons come forward and appealed to the minorities to avail this opportunity. "Furthermore, the government has granted Rs 30 crore for the renovation of mosques. Rs 700 crore were released for minorities fee reimbursement and scholarships. I am thankful to Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy for giving priority to the welfare of minorities. Marriages of 24 couples were performed," he said. Kamalapuram MLA Veerasiva Reddy, speaking on the occasion, he urged the Minister to strive for setting up of Urdu University in the district. Similarly, hostels for Muslims should be set up in each constituency, he said. He lauded the efforts of the Minister for trying for more allocations in the budget for minorities' welfare. Collector Kona Sashidhar, who presided over the programme, said that the government has decided to conduct mass marriages as there are more poor people in minorities. "I assumed charge three months ago and during this period, mass marriages were held three times. No other district in the State can boast of this distinction," he pointed out. He advised the Panchayat secretaries to create awareness among the people about mass marriages. District Grandhalaya Samstha chairman Ramkoti Reddy, Additional Joint Collector Madhsudhan, Minority Welfare Department ED Srinivasa Rao and others were present.
