Kolkata: One of India’s shrewdest and most successful administrators, Jagmohan Dalmiya, whose role as the President of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) achieved several milestone for India, passed away at private hospital here lateSunday night.

He was 75 and is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. Although, h e was ailing for quite some time, particularly after he returned to the helm of BCCI affairs, Dalmiya was stable for about three days since he underwent a coronary angiography, following complaints of chess pain.

"He died of internal gastrointestinal bleeding and internal organ failure," hospital sources said confirming the death. Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) of which he was the President, added: "At 6 PM in the evening his condition deteriorated and shortly afterwards he suffered a massive cardiac arrest from which he could not recover."

Dalmiya took over the reins of the BCCI for a second time in March, after a gap of 10 years, when he got a walkover in the elections. The former ICC President was instrumental in India getting to host two World Cups besides helping to revive the India-Pakistan bilateral series after 17 years.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rushed to the hospital to pay her last respects. "Sad. Jagmohan Dalmiyaji passes away. He was a giant amongst sports administrators, a true lover of Bengal. RIP," Banerjee tweeted. BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur and IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla will reach here on Monday.
