Opening of new ventures and department expansion by the Bangalore University

BENGALURU: The Bangalore University (BU) is said to be opening new ventures in association with other institutions and it is also on a land-allocation spree to its departments.

A syndicate meeting which was held recently has approved an allocation of 172 acres for eight new departments and centres on the campus. “We Have 1,111 acres of land, of which we have given 500 to different government institutions; we are left with very little now. Looking at the future expansion and requirement of our own departments, we are distributing the land,” BU vice-chancellor KR Venugopal told a source.

270 acres of land has already been given on lease to the institutions like the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) and National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

The syndicate has approved each of them 50 acres of land for the department of studies in botany and for MSc in aerospace and space technology; 25 acres for Central University, Gulbarga; 20 for fruit plantations; 15 acres each for the department of communication and multimedia research and department of architecture; two for the council of architecture and five for NAAC.

For setting up the Kempegowda museum and study centre BU has given 3 acres, which will have 12 seminar halls, four classrooms and a 1,500-seat auditorium.

“Opening new departments for advanced studies in all subjects is the need of the hour. We are trying to make maximum use of available land for the benefit of students and to expand departments,” Venugopal said.
