New Delhi: With the Election Commission’s nod to go-ahead for the appointment of the next Army Chief on Monday morning as appointments in the armed forces are apolitical, the UPA-2 government acted rapidly, with the defence ministry recommending the name of Army Vice-Chief Lt. Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhag as the next Army Chief to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

After Gen. Bikram Singh who is about to retire on July 31, Lt. Gen. Suhag turns to be the senior most serving officer. There is no doubt that UPG-II government has considered seniority as the basis for the appointment.
