Kolkata: Religious conversion should not be politicised and people have the right to preach their own religion, union minister Bandaru Dattatreya said here Saturday.

"According to law, everybody has the right to preach his own religion. On the conversion issue, law is there, and according to law only it proceeds. It should not be politicised," the minister of state for labour and employment said on the sidelines of an event held here.

"India is a land of tolerance, spirituality and humanity. Therefore, everybody has their own right and there should not be any cohesion," said Dattatreya, the Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha member from Secunderabad in Telangana.

There has been a raging debate in the country over reconversion or the 'ghar wapsi' (home-coming) campaign of right-wing organisations.

The Rajya Sabha witnessed disruptions and stalling of business in the recently concluded winter session as the opposition demanded clarification from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue.
