New Delhi: The Union government on Thursday said the NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog would replace the 65-year-old Planning Commission, months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his decision to scrap the Socialist-era organisation and set up a body that was in sync with contemporary challenges.

In line with Modi’s thrust on “cooperative federalism”, the NITI Aayog will be headed by the Prime Minister and will include all Chief Ministers and Lieut Governors. On Twitter, Modi said the new body would be "A pro-people, pro-active and participative development agenda stressing on empowerment equality is the guiding principle behind NITI Aayog."

Commenting on the move, Modi said the government bade "farewell to a 'one size fits all' approach towards development, while the (new) body also "celebrates India's diversity and plurality". The primary job of the new body that has been described as a think tank will be to advise the government on social and economic issues, and will have a vice-chairperson and a chief executive officer, besides six to eight members and two part-time members from universities and research organisations on rotational basis. It will have regional councils chaired either by the Prime Minister or his nominee and will also have domain experts as special invitees.
