The 44 year old Rahul Gandhi will replace his mother Sonia Gandhi, who has helmed the party since 1998 at a crucial period when she grasped it from then Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao few days after NDA first innings commenced. The stage is set for his takeover at a session of the All India Congress Committee in April, party sources confirm. Rahul Gandhi was appointed the party's number two leader in Jaipur in January 2013.

The Congress vice president reportedly held consultations with a cross section of leaders, and his crowning has been in air ever since the Delhi debacle providing fuel to demand for a strong and young leader to combat the Modi wave . "Rahul took time off to think over and he is very certain that he will not quit the ship midstream", said a senior leader at 24 Akbar Road, the national headquarter of the AICC at Delhi.

Rahul is expected to be back to from his vacation and soul searching for an active role in party affairs by March 10, says a Congress spokesperson, though he did not reveal the whereabouts of the Congress vice president."He is abroad. He has taken time off for introspection and soul searching before starting a new journey ."

As its chief campaigner of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi, is the fourth generation leader of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, which has led the party to a series of ups and downs in national and electoral affairs since it was handed its worst drubbing in a national election last year. One should wait and see, till April whether the savior of the Congress will become visible and take active role in its ressurection.
