Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister, unilaterally had a state of emergency declared 40 years ago across the country on the intervening night of June 24 and 25 in 1975. Officially issued by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under Article 352(1) of the Constitution for \"internal disturbance\", the Emergency was in effect from June 25, 1975 until its withdrawal on 21 March 1977.

Indira Gandhi resorted to the act following a mass movement that began in Gujarat and rolled across the northern plains by Jayaprakash Narayan – JP as he was popularly known – which brought the spirit of the rebellion to the citadels of power in Delhi on June 25.The order bestowed upon the Prime Minister the authority to rule by decree, allowing elections to be suspended and civil liberties to be curbed.
