Rohtak/Chandigarh: Chaos reigned in Haryana on Saturday with escalated violence in several areas as hooligans, who have joined ranks of Jat protestors, ran amok, setting afire government and private property and vehicles, blocking roads and highways, disrupting trains and uprooting tracks and indulging in looting.

Violence and arson in the quota stir spread to more areas with four more people being killed in firing by security personnel in Rohtak and Jhajjar districts even as the Army staged flag marches in affected pockets. Army had to use choppers to reach parts of blocked Rohtak district.

Curfew was clamped in five more Haryana towns--the latest being Jind, Hisar and Hansi in the evening. Earlier in the day, curfew was imposed in Sonipat and Gohana towns of Sonipat district. Curfew had already been clamped in Rohtak, Bhiwani and Jhajjar towns.

The road and rail traffic through Haryana and destined for neighboring states, including Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and Chandigarh remained disrupted with authorities cancelling bus and train services on most routes in the wake of continuing blockade.

Four persons were killed while several others sustained bullet injuries in firing opened by security personnel at Rohtak and Jhajjar districts. "Two persons were brought dead in PGIMS here," hospital authorities in Rohtak said. "One patient who was critically injured was operated upon but he has also died," authorities said in the evening.

Meanwhile, the Jat leaders refused to call off the quota agitation unless the Haryana government promulgates an ordinance to include the community in the OBC category. The response came after Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Saturday released a statement saying that his government has "accepted" their demands, but did not elaborate.

The leaders also demanded that a compensation of Rs 50 lakh be given to the kin of the person killed in firing on Friday and a government job to one of his family members. All India Jat Aarakshan Sangarsh Samiti's national president Yashapal Malik said, "We will not withdraw our agitation unless the state government brings an ordinance for giving reservation to Jats. We will not accept mere statements issued by Khattar.

The government will have to promulgate ordinance first. The government should pass a Bill in this regard in the (state) Assembly," he said. Replying to reports that youths from the community were "not in control" of the agitation leaders as they were indulging in incidents of violence and arson in parts of the state, Malik said "the youth are in our control. BJP workers were indulging in violence and arson." The leader had on Friday accused Khattar of having a "casteist mentality" and resisting quota demand as he was "not from the community".
