pm2Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was taken unawares by the DMK decision to withdraw support to his government. At the banquet hosted in honour of visiting Egyptian President Mohammad Morsy at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Prime Minister met CPM Politburo member Sitaram Yechury and took him aside. During the UPA-I Government, the UPA-Left Coordination Committee provided the platform for their regular interaction. Yechury wondered whether the Prime Minister has suddenly gone nostalgic about the Left. Then the Prime Minister inquired from Yechury as to what was happening on the DMK front. Yechury broke the news to the Prime Minister that according to his information, DMK leaders are set to meet President Pranab Mukherjee at 10pm. The Prime Minister asked National Security Adviser (NSA) Shiv Shankar Menon to check out and he reported back that the appointment of the DMK delegation is at 10:30 pm. It was because of the banquet that the appointment was delayed. It was a rude shock to the government, as its own information was that the DMK would await the UNHRC vote and the bid for resolution in parliament. The sudden turn of events confirmed that the DMK was acting to a script and earlier the engagement with the three Union Ministers in Chennai was a façade, as it had already made up its mind to withdraw support.
