Hyderabad: Senior Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader and Bhupalpalli MLA S Madhusudhana Chary on Tuesday assumed charge as the first Speaker of Telangana Legislative Assembly after being unanimously elected to the post as all parties in the 119-member House supported his candidature. Protem Speaker K Jana Reddy formally announced Chary’s election and handed over the charge to him.

Accompanied by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, Ministers and floors leaders of various parties, Chary took the charge on the second day of the first session in the Telangana Assembly. Chary has been a close associate of the Chief Minister KCR since the TRS was formed and had actively participated in the agitation for separate State. He was elected to the Assembly from Bhupalpalli in Warangal district. Earlier Chary was the TDP leader from the inception of the party in 1982 and was elected MLA in 1994. He shifted loyalties to NTR TDP (Laxmi Parvathi) after change of guard in 1996.

After assuming charge, Chary said the House should reflect the aspirations of all Telangana people and also meet their expectations. He wanted every member to strive hard for the reconstruction of new state. He also promised to discharge his duties with giving any scope of favoritism, and would take decisions in accordance with the rules and guidelines.

Congratulating Chary, KCR recalled his close association with the TRS leader in the last 13-year struggle for Telangana State under the party’s banner. He promised to extend all cooperation for the smooth conduct of the house. He also sought the cooperation of all the members in the house.

Opposition leader K Jana Reddy said that it was a great opportunity for Chary to serve the Telangana in the form of Speaker. Congress as the main opposition in the house would play a constructive role and fight for the development of the new State. TDLP floor leader E Dayakar Rao said that it was the responsibility of the Speaker to maintain decency and decorum of the House by giving sufficient time to the opposition during the debates. ­BJP senior leaders G Kishan Reddy and K Laxman said their party would always be the first to support the government if it strove for the development of the state. It would also not hesitate to fight against the government if it failed to implement the promises during the elections.

Legislative Affairs minister T Harish Rao, Education Minister J Jagadish Reddy and Congress leaders G Chinna Reddy, Redya Naik , J Geeta Reddy and Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, and TRS member K Surekha and TDP members T Srinivas Yadav were among others who spoke on the occasion.
