Hyderabad: The power crisis in Telangana is going from bad to worse. With no alternative measures in place to meet the increased power demand, the power utilities have decided to increase power cuts in the domestic sector ranging from over six hours in the city areas to about 10-12 hours in the suburbs and districts. They have also decided to reduce free power for agriculture from seven to six hours.
Hyderabad: Power Cut
Officials of the TSSPDCL (Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited) told The Hans India that power consumption in the domestic sector was increasing as the state was still reeling under the heat wave conditions. The sudden increase in usage of power by the agricultural sector has left the power utilities with no option but to increase the duration of power cuts in the twin cities as well as districts.

The officials said that the while the demand for power was about 100 MU, the power utilities are not able to supply more than 82 million units. At present, the two discoms- TSSPDCL and TSNPDCL (Northern Power Distribution Company Limited), are supplying only for six hours to the agriculture sector as against seven hours supplied earlier, the officials added.

The district authorities of the energy department have been instructed to give first priority to agriculture in power supply in the areas where farmers have already started farming operations. The farmers have been asked to utilise power being supplied in three spells (two hours in each spell) in the present Kharif season. In TSSPDCL jurisdiction, power is being supplied to 2100 agricultural feeders every day. The total number of feeder is 2500. Power is being supplied to the remaining feeders on alternate days.

The officials said the managements of the power utilities brought to the notice of the Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao about the precarious power situation in the state. Sources said the government is likely to pursue the power issue with union power ministry and would try to get some additional power from the Centrally Generated Stations (CGS) by the end of next week. On the contrary, the AP government seems to be focusing more on power sector and claims that the immediate short term measures taken by it to revive the power sector had succeeded in reducing the power shortage from 25 MU to 16.6 MU in less than a month’s time. It is buying power from Karnataka, Jajjar in Haryana and is also getting additional quota from unallocated power available with the Centre. Negotiations with Tamil Nadu for power purchase are also at an advanced stage. According to officials, in most parts of Andhra power cuts were being imposed for about three hours in cities, up to five hours in towns and about seven hours in villages.
