TS takes U-turn on separate ID card, The senior officials have found fault with the Public Relations Office of the CMO for sending a wrong message among the people.

Govt issues clarification on the matter

Hyderabad: In view of the flak it had received over its proposal to issue identity cards to citizens of Telangana, the State government has now taken a step backward and claimed that it was just a proposal that was expressed at the video conference the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had with district collectors and no such decision had been taken so far.

The senior officials have found fault with the Public Relations Office of the CMO for sending a wrong message among the people. Senior officials on Wednesday said this issue had come up for discussion but the officials had the Chief Minister that a citizen card was not possible and would land the government in legal problems.

They told him that individual states did not have any authority to issue separate citizen cards. Issuing such cards was the prerogative of the Centre and not the states. They also told him that already there were many identity cards like Aadhaar, voter ID etc and hence it would not be proper to issue any new cards.

Though the discussion ended there, the official press note from CMO stated that the Chief Minister had directed that special identity cards be issued to the people of Telangana based on the data available from the intensive household survey that was conducted recently.
