Hyderabad: Reiterating that the Telangana government had met all the demands that were put forward by the striking junior doctors, Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister T Rajaiah on Wednesday cautioned the striking junior doctors that GO 1022 which banned strikes would be invoked if they did not join elective and emergency services in government hospitals.

Rajaiah said one-year rural service was non-negotiable but the government was open for talks with the junior doctors to resolve other issues. At a media conference, which he addressed after reviewing policy measures related to hospital administration in Telangana, the Deputy Chief Minister said the junior doctors never approached the government before giving the strike notice on September. 27. They also did not meet him when launched the strike on September 29.

“They must appreciate that the government is ready to meet their demands inlcuding 15 percent hike in stipend and deployment of Special Protection Force (SPF). The SPF alone will put a burden of Rs. 8 crore annually on the exchequer,” Rajaiah said.

According to him, the junior doctors are only ‘students’ and they have given a ‘bond’ while joining the MBBS course that they will abide by the norms that are in place. “Nobody can say that doctors are not needed to serve in rural areas and they cannot refuse to go there,” he added.
