  • TS govt allocates Rs.2282.86 crore for strengthening infrastructure and others
  • 42 area hospitals in the state to be upgraded by spending `1 crore on each of them

Hyderabad: The huge budgetary allocations to government general hospitals in the city are being seen as an effort by the Telangana government to strengthen these hospitals in order to increase their revenues under the ‘Aarogyasri’ scheme.

Presenting the budget, Finance Minister Eatala Rajender said the government hospitals would be strengthened by spending Rs 2282.86 crore. Osmania General Hospital and Gandhi Hospital will get Rs 100 crore each, while maternity hospitals at Sultan Bazaar and Petlaburj will get Rs 50 crore each. The budgetary allocation for Niloufer Hospital is Rs 30 crore and Rs 25 crore is allocated for the King Kothi hospital.

An official of the Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishat felt that the huge allocations this time might be used for construction of new buildings on the hospital premises and for strengthening medical infrastructure and equipment.

“The government may be aiming to improve the image of these hospitals under the ‘Aarogyasri’ scheme. Till now, these hospitals were getting only 17 per cent of Aarogyasri money whereas big corporate hospitals were taking away the lion’s share of up to 80 per cent. The government’s bid might be to strengthen these hospitals, so that people will get a positive impression and prefer these hospitals for availing the health scheme,” the official added.

The same thinking may have led the TRS government to convert the District General Hospitals into Super-specialty hospitals. Similarly, the 42 Area Hospitals in the state will be upgraded by spending Rs 1 crore on each of them.

In the case of teaching hospitals, decisions related to expenditure of less than Rs 5 lakh could be taken by the concerned hospital Superintendent.

For expenditures more than this amount, Hospital Development Advisory Committee - comprising Superintendent, MLA, Municipal commissioner and RDO – would be the deciding authority, the official added.
