Warangal: A two-day inter-NIT interaction workshop on curriculum for Deans (Academic) of National Institutes of Technology (NITs) commenced at NIT Warangal in Kazipet on Monday.

NIT Warangal Director Prof T Srinivasa Rao inaugurated the workshop. He highlighted the need for interaction among faculty of NITs for sharing ideas to promote best practices in the institutes.

He said that certain parts of the curriculum components might be made common to possible extent across NITs for any branch. Identifying common slots in some of the weekdays would help students of one NIT to register for a course at another NIT or to organise industry lectures across NITs. Making use of information communication technologies for delivering lectures or knowledge transfer would help new NITs, he added.

The delegates discussed on various curriculum components and tried to suggest a range of credits for a programme. Deliberations would continue on Tuesday and at the end, a report would be submitted on the initiatives to be taken up by NITs at their respective senates.

Some of the issues mentioned in Kakodkar Committee report would be identified for discussion at the next workshop to be hosted by a selected NIT in near future. Deans (Academic Affairs) from 16 NITs are participating in the workshop.

Heads of various departments and some Senior Professors of NIT Warangal are also taking part. The sessions were also held in a workshop mode where the delegates were made to work in groups on a given topic related to curriculum.

After the discussions, each group compiles information, summarises findings and presents it to the whole participants for further scrutiny.

The meeting was expected to come up with recommendations for considerations by the MHRD. The interaction workshop on curriculum was expected to facilitate participation of industry along with research and development experts in the teaching and learning process.

Prof DVLN Somayajulu, Dean (Academic) of NIT Warangal, Professors G. Venkat Reddy, CB Kameswara Rao, IAK Reddy, DVSS Siva Sarma, Madhu Murthy and NVSN Sarma acted as facilitators for conducting the group workshops.
