Hyderabad: The Telangana government has decided to acquire one lakh acre of forest land for drinking water grid project for which due compensation will also be paid to the Fore Department. According to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, a new national law to utilise forest properties for development purposes is on the anvil.

At a review meeting on this project held at Secretariat on Tuesday, Chandrashekar Rao said that 620 engineers would be recruited shortly by TSPSC (Telangana State Public Service Commission) especially to work for this challenging project. Henceforth, this scheme would be called as “Telangana Drinking Water project.” Also, a new body-“Telangana Drinking Water Supply Corporation” is being floated to oversee the launching and implementation of the scheme.

He told officials to ensure that the project catered to the drinking water needs of the people at least for 30 years to come. Rao also asked them to choose international standard pipe manufacturers, preferably hailing from Telangana, for this scheme. The Chief Minister stated that Municipalities should take care of laying pipeline in cities and towns.

When HMWSSB officials brought to the notice of the Chief Minister about objections raised by railway department in laying pipelines to Hyderabad (at three places where railway tracks are overlapping) as part of Godavari drinking water project, Rao spoke to Railway General Manager.
