Khammam: To bail out Telangana State from the power crisis, the State-owned Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), is giving top priority to increase the coal production in its region spread across Khammam, Warangal, Karimnagar and Adilabad districts.

The necessity was such that the State government had lined up quite a few thermal power projects to address the needs of domestic and industrial sectors. The onus is on SCCL to increase annual coal production by 40 million tonnes. In its endeavour to increase the coal production, the SCCL besides planning to start 15 new coal mines in its region, has also accorded top priority to complete the construction of the Singareni thermal power project at Jaipur in Adilabad district by the end of the current year to augment the power supply.

When contacted, the SCCL officials said that efforts are underway to secure some of the coal blocks in Odisha and Chhattisgarh for undertaking coal mining in the neighbouring States as well. Meanwhile, the SCCL has appointed multi-departmental teams to gear up its employees envisaging the importance of augmenting the coal production.

After a not too impressive performance during the 2014-15 financial year, the company has set a target of producing 60.30 million tonnes for the 2015-16 fiscal. It could be a huge target especially considering the coal production during the 2014-15 where it has so far achieved just 39 million tonnes against the set target for the year of 55 million tonnes.

According to the SCCL Chairman and Managing Director N Sridhar, the employees should put in efforts to produce 80 million tonnes of coal per annum in the next few years to address the future needs. Besides appointing teams, the company has also made arrangements to spread the message of increasing the coal production.

Campaign materials such as flexis, posters and pamphlets have been sent to all coal mining areas to gear up the employees to face the challenges ahead. The message is loud and clear for around 60,000 SCCL employees to bail out the State from power blushes.
