Karimnagar: In a shocking incident, a civil contractor locked up a classroom leaving the little children sitting in a verandah of a government primary school at Repaka village in Karimnagar district. The contractor resorted to this appalling act as payment for the construction of additional class room on the school premises was not paid.

Additional classroom was constructed on the school premises as part of National Programme for Education of Girls for Elementary Level (NPEGEL) in 2009. Ex-Sarpanch Itukuri Balaiah bagged the contract for Rs 2 lakh. After the completion of the construction, authorities paid only Rs 1.72 lakh.

He made several attempts to get the pending amount but in vain. Vexed with the attitude of the officials, he locked up the classroom. On the other hand, the officers at the mandal-level said that the contractor did not submit appropriate documents. That is why the payment was delayed, they added.
