The raging swine flu in Hyderabad has badly affected the footfall at the 75th All India Industrial Exhibition (Numaish), which concluded on Sunday. Though the Exhibition Society had extended the Numaish by a week (as per tradition, the trade fair ends on February 15), there was no improvement in the number of visitors.

According to the society,18.06 lakh people visited the annual exhibition, a dip of three lakh compared to the previous year. "This year we had anticipated 23 lakh visitors as we had increased the number of stalls from 2,200 to 2,500. However, due to swine flu impact, the number of visitors dipped. In 2014, 21 lakh visited the city's most-popular exhibition.

The Exhibition society had made elaborate arrangements in view of the swine flu outbreak, with sales of masks and also anti dotes at subsidized rates. But that did not improve matters. "Worst hit were the stall owners who had paid Rs One lakh and rued they did not make even their maintenance and return journey costs,"' says secretary P Narotham Reddy.

With drop in visitors, even the Exhibition Society's revenue was hit. It had earned Rs 11 crore through sale of tickets and other ways and means in 2014 but ended up with just Rs nine crore this year. The disaster has made the society to plan a summer session of the Expo later by May or so to appease its vendors and also raise adequate funds for its hospital and education projects on the grounds.

The KCR government has not only extended the lease but also offered funds to improve the amenities and also give them permanent rights. The exhibition has remained the only event of its kind in the world to be organized at a stretch for a 46-day period at its 23-acre (93,000 m2) permanent venue in Nampally. It features joy rides, eateries and other entertainment options for the visitors. From a mere 100 stalls in 1938 when it was started at the Public Gardens, the venue was shifted to the Exhibition Grounds. The name All India Industrial Exhibition was renamed to its original name, the Numaish in 2009.
